Five Habits All Good Leaders Have

Leadership is probably the single most elusive advantage a company can have. It’s also the most important. All of the work done by your ad agency, all of the analytics your tech team runs, all of the website building, and customer service efforts in the world can’t make up for weak leadership at the head of a company. A good leader is someone who not only can perform all the actions needed to keep the company functional and profitable, he or she also has to be one to inspire their workers and their company while earning their trust, respect, and loyalty. If you can do that as the leader of your company, you can surmount any challenge. Any marketing agency you can hire can’t provide the leadership your company needs. Here are five habits that all good leaders have to develop:

  • Empowering their employees. The best bosses know that they can’t succeed alone. They delegate responsibility and authority to get jobs done on time. Not only do good leaders delegate within their company, they also delegate responsibility and authority to outside parties and enable them to do their jobs effectively. No one can tell you how to delegate.
  • Energizing their companies. Good leaders don’t consume creative energy, they exude it. You can do this by feeding energy back into your organization by creating a compelling vision for your employees to work towards and communicate this vision to get them excited for their individual role in what you are trying to accomplish.
  • Effective communication. One of the worst things a company leader can do is close herself off from communication with her staff. The best leaders are always listening to their employees and communicating their goals from the top down. If your employees aren’t dialed into the mission of your organization because they don’t know what it is, your company will have a hard time maintaining success.
  • Solving problems. Another power that you have is to create a culture where all employees are engaged in solving the common and uncommon problems they encounter in their work. Good leaders can then, within this culture, give their employees the responsibility to handle issues with their support.
  • Providing support. Smart employees look to their leaders for support. When they have issues or problems of any kind, it helps to grow a culture of responsibility and problem solving, but they also have to know that their boss will help them when they need it. Support comes from problem solving skills and open communication with all employees. If they know they can trust you to support them, they’ll work to achieve the vision you have for your business.

Once you have mastered these habits of leadership that all great leaders must master, you can start to rely on your employees for more and more difficult work and entrust them with more responsibility. As your company grows, you can start to bring in other assets to help secure your market share.
